About Bloomington Radiology
Bloomington-Normal has a long history of providing local radiology services, dating back to the 1930’s when Dr. Edwin Rypins first arrived in the community to practice radiology. In the late 40’s to early 50’s, Dr. George Irwin and Dr. Harold Shinall joined forces to form Bloomington Radiology And Nuclear Medicine SC. These two physicians provided radiology services to St. Joseph Hospital, Mennonite Hospital and Brokaw Hospital.
In 1966, Dr. Shinall founded the Bloomington Normal School of Radiologic Technology. This program is still in existence today through Heartland University and continues to provide training for radiologic technologists.
Our group’s first private office was located on East St. across from Mennonite Hospital in Bloomington, providing services for plain film radiographic imaging, chest and extremities, and interpretations from outside entities.

In 1988 the practice moved to Towanda Avenue and the services provided increased substantially. At this point, the group was comprised of eight physicians. New services included radiographic and fluoroscopy, mammography, and DEXA (bone density).
